The Day Has Come

23 Feb

According to the New York Times, J.K. Rowling has announced that she will indeed be releasing a new book–an adult book. No other information has been given–no title or release date. She has left Bloomsbury, her Potter publishing home, for Little, Brown and Company.

A Time for Change......

So….what do you think? I can already hear the rumor mills turning. What does an adult book mean?? I mean–I’m finished a Master’s THESIS on HP!!! It felt pretty adult to me (HAHA-self loathing begins here). I seriously can’t wait for this book! GIVE IT TO ME NOW! Let the crazy anticipation begin. I will be there at midnight to pick up this book.

I wonder why she left Bloomsbury though…

I wonder about all those rumors about a political fairytale that were running around for so long…

I wonder if she is as nervous as we all are….it’s hard to be a Rowlinian.

I’m guessing she left because of Bloomsbury/Scholastic’s associate with kiddie lit and LBC with adult. But who knows. Maybe they insulted her mother.

That was my guess too- but Bloomsbury does have some pretty big adult titles with their regular publishing. Some of my friends were speculating there may have been some lack of support for the book (going a different direction, maybe she already wrote her opus) but I just could not imagine any agent or editor turning it down. It is the biggest book you could land–maybe bigger than Harry because everyone is waiting to see what she does next. Who knows–you might be right. Someone might have insulted her mother–or worse–Hermione.

        Or worse, Ginny.

No seriously, I think it’s a brilliant move on her agent’s part. It’s her best shot for breaking away from her pre-existing brand, her best chance for true literary success.

I completely agree. I have read so much of the online banter this week about how “this” should have been a a prequel or an encyclopedia (the encyclopedia is something I would like…I won’t deny my secret desire for Hogwarts, a History), and I realized that as an author I could understand the want to for a new place and a new start. I thinks it is a brave move–and brave does not cover it. I just don’t have a big enough word.

Ovarian fortitude. It takes ovarian fortitude for that ballsy of a move.

I don’t know if you know who Rosemary Radford Reuther is, but she is my Professor and friend. She will be hearing about Ovarian fortitude this week. You have officially made my phrase of the week. Thank you!
