Everyone is on the hunt for the next Hunger Games….

6 Mar

So….

The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins

My friend Kate and I were having dinner and talking about what makes Dystopian YA literature such a magnet (I have my theories….a whole DISSERTATION worth of theories)….

and then I saw this great piece from NPR that I just had to share!

Enjoy!

The Next Hunger Games

What do you think?

Why is Dystopian Literature so popular right now? What does it say about us? What themes keep coming up? Do you think this is a passing genre?

What book or series do you think are going to be big? Any reading suggestions?

Coincidentally I just wrote a post over on my blog about The Hunger Games and the rebirth of the dystopian novel. I think it’s very interesting that dystopian books are experiencing a revival right now and that it could possibly reflect current world situations, e.g. rising prices for EVERYTHING, youth unemployment etc.

YES!!! I keep saying this. Dystopia fever is a reflection if inner anxiety! Some of the paragraphs I highlight in bestsellers would freak parents/politicians out because they highlight what is on the news/activists/everyones minds. I think it is a clear outlet for youth anxiety and for authors to reach the youth in a way that mainstream media/politics cant/are not able to (smart enough) to. This is a double edge sword though. Some messages are great. Some make me want to bang my head against a wall…
